Graduate Program in Geotechnical Engineering

The Graduate Program in Geotechnical Engineering started in 1977, offering Master’s degree. The Doctoral degree began to be offered in 1984.

The graduate program research lines focus on the three main branches of Geotechnical Engineering: Soil Mechanics, Geological Engineering and Rock Mechanics. Lines of research include:

DEVELOPMENT OF FIELD AND LABORATORY EQUIPMENT FOR GEOTECHNICAL TESTING

ENVIRONMENTAL GEOTECHNICS

FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

GEOSYNTHETICS

GEOTECHNICAL MAPPING

GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF NATURAL AND COMPACTED SOILS

NUMERICAL AND PHYSICAL MODELING OF GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS

ORNAMENTAL ROCKS AND STONE FACINGS

ROCK MECHANICS

SOIL IMPROVEMENT

TUNNELING

Requirements for the master’s and doctoral degrees should ideally be fulfilled in two and four years, respectively. However, these periods may be extended under special conditions.
The current Graduate Program in Geotechnical Engineering coordinator is Professor Valéria Guimarães Silvestre Rodrigues.
